Cheers to the Graduate!

That familiar feeling is in the air – the call of college Winter break.  Another semester come and gone, and the promise of a fresh start in the impending New Year.

This Winter break will be a little different, signaling not only the end of a school year, but school altogether as Sarah prepares to graduate next month!

My baby sister has been slammed with the papers, projects, and exams that come in the home stretch, so I am honored to share some of her beautiful senior pictures. She just finished taking these this past weekend with her best friend and photographer, Sydney, and they completely capture her beautiful inner light.

I am so proud of all that this lady has accomplished in the brief time she has been a Ram. She rose to the top of her class in Fashion Merchandising (and was hand-picked as one of the handful to meet Tim Gunn during a college visit), and plans to use her new degree to land a job at one of her favorite foamy companies.

Sarah is such a hard-working individual, and I completely believe she can achieve anything she sets her mind to. I just hope one day her aspirations will bring her to me on the West coast! Or we’ll make our own adventure in a new state. Is from VA2CA2HI too much?

It may be a month early, but congrats, seester! I love you so much.

Bring Back Summer

As of today, October 1st,  it is safe to say that summer is really gone…sigh. Of course I do love this beautiful fall weather we are having in VA and I am so excited for snowboarding season, but summer will always be my one true love. So to continue on with our “B” week theme, we thought we would B-ring B-ack Summer by sharing some of our favorite warm weather moments through our favorite photo sharing app, Instagram!

An Ode to FOAM!

collagecovers

Do you ever find yourself completely engulfed in every article and every page of a magazine? Like, starring and bookmarking and re-reading pages until they were splitting apart? Well, that actually did not happen to us very often. At least, not until FOAM magazine entered our lives.

Headed by the stylish and courageous Sari Tuschman {above}, (F)ashion (O)cean (A)rt (M)usic magazine caught Sarah’s eye when she was browsing through the daily Refinery29 articles. Even though the article is now more than a year old, the pictures of Sari struck Sarah as a perfect portrayal of surfer chic. The passion Sari exuded about her publication and the humbleness in her responses had us signing up for subscriptions within days. Even now, one of the quotes she gave in that article still sticks with us: Continue reading

First post

A first post is a big thing for a blogger. It’s like placing a newborn baby in front of the world, and hoping you’re not the only one who thinks he/she is adorable (serious props to Kate Middleton). So, world, my sister and I present to you our collaborative blog, FromVAtoCA.

Hopefully, the title hints (subtly, of course) that there was a move from Virginia to California at one point. My sister and I grew up on the coast of Virginia, and I (Emmy) moved to Central California for college. Hating the 2700 mile divide, we talked almost daily about the coastal differences in culture, fashion, and surf, among many of our other interests.

Now we find ourselves on the precipice of “adult life” and facing a lot of change. It seems like right out of college, every decision will be the biggest of your young life. What will my first job be? Am I going to love where I live? Where I work? Where will I be in the next five years? 10? (Those last few are the WORST.)

But I am more than grateful to have my sister here through all of it, and I hope know she would say the same.  So, we decided to make our normal conversations about the coasts public (with a little more organization, of course).

We both love fashion, and that is probably the most distinct difference we have. She (Sarah) mixes bold with classic pieces, and throws in a little bit of edge – think a strong-colored sheath with a crisp white leather vest. I’m a little more laid-back bohemian with my glam moments – like an ikat print ankle pant with a perfectly cut white tee. She loves the designers; I love the stores, but we both love the clothes.

Another thing we both adore is the ocean. We have always been close to a coastline, and nothing clears our heads faster than toes in the sand. Sarah is the surfer girl of the family, and I am the beach-chair cheerleader (side note: I used to surf, but haven’t gotten much time in on the West Coast. And the water is a bit chilly.) But the adventurous callings of the sea is one of our biggest inspirations, as well as the women who answer back. All hail, surfer girls.

Here’s a little taste of what’s to come:

– Summer Surf Events (US Open/ECSC)

– Our favorite brands (East and West-coast based, respectively)

– Alliterative weekly posts that are absolutely not over-used (Tuneage Tuesday, Worthy Women Wednesday, Find Friday)

– Style inspirations

– DIY’s

And on that note, we’re still taking requests.
