Weddington Way: October Style Challenge

Sarah and I are lucky when we get a chance to be on the same side of the country once or twice a year. These past six months, we’ve been just spoiled with the amount of sister time we’ve been able to spend together. Most recently, we were reunited earlier this month to celebrate the wedding of our cousin, Colby, and we were both honored to stand by her side as bridesmaids! Her wedding day was picture perfect, and the bride couldn’t have been more stunning. Here are a few of our favorite sister moments from the weekend:

wedding-collage

The wedding got us thinking about our own personal styles for our “big day”. I mean, what girl doesn’t dream about her wedding day – or at least make a board about it on Pinterest? That’s how we came across the October Style Challenge for Weddington Way. If you don’t know about the website already, Weddington Way makes planning a bridal party look effortless by curating the top trends and designers on an easy-to-use site.

For the challenge, we were asked to style a head-to-toe bridesmaid/Maid of Honor look, which was perfect timing for us! We began by taking the bridal questionnaire to gauge what style fit our personalities best by answering questions like “structured or flowy” and “what words describe your dream wedding”.

After our showrooms were created, we picked our favorite dresses and created Maid of Honor looks for each other. Yes, when you have a sister, you also get a built-in Maid of Honor for your wedding. And we wouldn’t want it any other way!

Emmy/West Coast Wedding

The words that stood out to me most on the questionnaire were “romantic” and “garden”. Living on the West Coast, there is an endless list of outdoor destinations I wouldn’t mind having my future wedding at. The location that inspired my head-to-toe look was this gorgeous Big Sur ceremony overlooking both the Redwoods and the Pacific Ocean. The style I chose was both romantic and feminine that paired perfectly with bohemian decorations, like a flower crown and Flash Tattoos.

weddington-emmy

Dress: Jim Hjelm Style Chiffon/Color 5414 (Sage)

1. A simple flower crown complementing a loose up-do. I couldn’t find a link to purchase the pictured crown, but something like this from Etsy is just as lovely.

2. Dusty rose lip color from Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics with a matte finish, and for an added bonus, it’s 100% Vegan, helping me and Mother Nature.

3. Forego the statement jewelry for Flash Tattoos, which are metallic temporary tattoos with unique designs, including this Lena set. And for $20, you can cover your whole bridal party!

4. Neutral shoe with a touch of bling. These are Vera Wang Lavender label, which are sadly sold out, but I love this alternative from Steve Madden.

Bouquet: I know I have always wanted anemones and peonies in my bouquet, and this amazing bouquet from a Gatsby New Year’s wedding perfectly tied the look together.

Sarah/East Coast Wedding

Classic and romantic is the vibe I was going for after completing my questionnaire. I am already a huge fan of designer Lela Rose, and mostly everyone knows that purple is my absolute favorite color, so this style was perfect for my dream wedding day. This elegant shape is a perfect canvas for modern accessories, like crystal drop earrings and killer laser-cut sandals.

weddington-sarah

Dress: Lela Rose Style LR207 (Color: Suede Rose)

1. A beautifully crafted sash from BHLDN with delicate flowers adorned with sparkling crystals adds an extra special touch.

2. I love a great lip color, and this easy-wear vibrant shade from Revlon is my everyday (and wedding day) go-to.

3. These neutral Klub Nico sandals have an Art Nouveau vibe to them that still reads really modern.

4. Crystal drop earrings from BaubleBar keeps a simple style with a serious dosage of sparkle.

Bouquet: The perfect blend of purples and pinks featuring my favorite flower, stargazer lillies.

We hope you enjoyed our Weddington Way styles!

Happy Friday! As our social media pages are filling with Weekend 2 pictures, we are reminiscing about a few of our favorite things that helped us survive our very first Coachella weekend. The accessories, jewelry, and caffeine (make that lots of caffeine) that we love and that made each day count.

Oh, and another favorite thing is capturing a video at just the perfect time. This was taken from the Martin Garrix set on Night 1, which Emmy uploaded it to her Instagram (@emtaps). We wanted to share it with you all, and sorry, Mom, for the language!

Have a great Easter weekend everyone –

Coachella Diaries: Day 3

day3_top2

Waking up on the final day of the festival was bittersweet. We were excited to see the final set of performers, but so bummed to face the real world the following day. An early Starbucks run was a must before the long day of festivaling, packing, and driving, so we visited the El Paseo Shopping district in Palm Desert for a hearty brunch and some window shopping. Then, we geared up for one more great day at the grounds!

The hot and clear Day 3 (with no wind, yes!) called for comfortably cute sneaker ensembles. Emmy was dying to wear her white Vans that she painted for 4th of July last year, which she dressed up with a fringe bikini top and sheer kimono. Sarah rocked her own fringe festivalwear with dark cut-off shorts and brightly colored sneaks. The fringe looks even better when jumping, don’t ya think?

Who We Saw

It seems like we always start the day with a more mellow band, and Sunday was no different with a fun set from Frank Turner. If we were to describe his musical style, it would be a cross between Flogging Molly and Mumford & Sons, which sounds like a great musical pairing to us! We then danced away to the upbeat tunes of The 1975, and headed over to the Krewella tent. An EDM set during the daytime was definitely an interesting experience, since you’re not getting the full effect of the lights, but Krewella’s crazy talented girl duo made up for it. After Krewella, we made our way back outside to The Naked and Famous, whose dreamy melodies had us swaying. Our last performed of the night was Calvin Harris, and we wanted to have the best experience in the front (like, the VERY front), so we sat and held our seats for almost an hour. When he finally hit the stage, the music was so loud that our bodies were literally one with the beat. When he shot off fire and pyrotechnics, we could literally feel the heat on our faces. And then when the confetti shot out of the stage at the end, we were swimming in red hearts. It was loud and crazy, but in the best possible way. If you’re heading out to bands on Day 3, make sure to see Krewella, The Naked and Famous, and Calvin!

Coachella Diaries: Day 2

Image

We hope you guys enjoyed our post from Day 1! We were slow to get out of bed the following day due to our aching backs and feet, so we started with an early breakfast at a cute French bakery and a little dip in the neighborhood pool. The weather was significantly cooler than Day 1, and there was a wind advisory, so we packed our scarves just in case. Little did we know that we would be attending #Dustchella several hours later (more on that below).

Outfit Details

Sarah (top): Brixton Messer Hat in Black, Ray-Ban Aviators, Asos top, Urban Outfitters shorts, Vans sneakers (old, similar here), Kai Luxe MERMAID necklace, Lightning Bolt necklace
Emmy (bottom): Handmade flower crown, Urban Outfitters sunglasses, Urban Outfitters dress, Seychelles boots, Long Lost Jewelry Love Spike necklace, Vanessa Mooney Pretty Girls necklace

Sarah mixed a fun sneaker with edgy high-waisted shorts and a black fedora style hat, and Emmy dressed down her feminine frock with playful cut-out booties. We also kept our accessories simple, but wanted something extra special to stand out in the desert. Enter Flash Tattoos. These metallic, jewelry-inspired temporary tattoos are the perfect way to layer on the bling without worrying about bulk or heat. We bought the Zahra pack for the festival. You can see them featured on Emmy’s shoulder blade in the bottom left frame of the Outfit collage and Sarah’s wrist in her close-up picture on the Top collage. Definitely a must for any accessories lover!

Who We Saw

We were pretty accustomed to the layout of the grounds by Day 2, so we were ready for another day jam-packed with bands. We started off with a mellow set from the crazy-talented City and Colour, and kept our spots for the highly-anticipated set from Kid Cudi, which did not disappoint! We took a few breaks for food and water, and then came back for the Foster the People set, which is one of our favorite bands to see live. Then, we ran over to catch the end of Sleigh Bells set before Pharrell. We’re sure you read about all of the craziness that happened with his 5 GUEST PERFORMERS: Busta Rhymes, Nelly, Diplo, Snoop Dogg, AND Gwen Stefani! Due to the winds, they had to keep many of the jumbo screens lowered, which was a bummer because there were so many celebrities in one place. We have no idea what Pharrell will have in store for Weekend 2, so you have to go see him, Kid Cudi, and Foster the People in your Day 2 events.

day2_dust

#Dustchella

One thing we did not foresee in our Coachella packing list was a bandanna. In the Day 1 EDM tents, we saw plenty of people with bandanas covering their faces, and we just figured they were making a fashion statement. Once we started having coughing fits, we realized that all of the jumping and dancing in one area creates a mini dust storm. So, for Day 2, we packed our scarf and bandanna planning to only use them in a tight-packed crowd. But the wind was so strong throughout the grounds, that there was dust flying all over our faces and into our eyes, nose, and mouth. Regular festival-goers said wind that strong was rare, but we ended up walking around looking like the picture above regardless. By the time we got a good look at each other in regular light, our faces were shaded by the light brown dust. Nothing another long shower couldn’t fix! But another tip would be to definitely pack a bandanna in your day bag – you never know how quickly the weather will change.

Check back tomorrow for our final day details!

Coachella Diaries: Day 1

Image

We’re really starting to feel the tinge from our post-Coachella blues. Three days of nothing but music, peace signs, and palm trees can really transport you to a vacation-like mindset. The best part about today was getting to upload 500+ of the pictures taken over the weekend and relive all of the fun through these snapshots in time. Since this was our first Coachella, we wanted to overview each day’s details, fashions, and performers to not only help us for next year, but to also give some insight to the Weekend 2 attendees! Day 1 was the longest, but it was also Emmy’s birthday, which made the day that much more special. It was also a scorcher in terms of weather, but the clouds and light breeze made for a perfect evening full of amazing acts!  Continue reading

Pumped-Up Kicks

sneakers

1/2/3/4/5/6

I thought the title was appropriate with Foster the People playing at Coachella this year. With concerts running from morning until midnight, I want to be able to walk the festival grounds all day without my feet becoming a sunburned, blistery mess. Fashion sneakers are the perfect way to keep things casual, but still fun and fashionable. I would pair any of these with denim cutoffs and a band tee. I’m going to pick up more than a few pairs at Urban Outfitter’s Spring Mix Sale – all shoes are 25% off (including those cute laser-cut Jeffrey Campbell sneaks)!

Which fashion sneakers would you wear at Coachella?

Leather is Better

1/2/3/4/5/6

Coachella isn’t just for the boho-vintage-hippie-flowery kings and queens. We’re talking about one of the biggest music festivals on the West Coast! With performances from HAIM, Queens of the Stone Age, Foster the People, Bastille, and CHVRCHES in the line-up, you need an outfit that will play up your inner rock groupee. This mix of summer leather pieces lend an edgy, sexy vibe to a flowy maxi skirt, or highlight a bold print for an all-out rocker look.

What are your favorite summer leather pieces?

Coachella Bound!

coachella-checklist

Spring is here, which can only mean one thing for us West Coasters. Coachella is upon us! Well, actually make that two things. Coachella and the birthdays of FromVA2CA (April 11 & April 14). And amazingly enough, they both happen to fall on the same weekend! Best. Birthdays. Ever.

Yes, both sisters are headed to the desert this year for Coachella Weekend 1. As first-timers, our planning has been a little excessive, but we really can’t hide our excitement. The music, the atmosphere, and of course, the fashion! Indio the perfect place to let your inner flower child shine.

It is a little difficult planning your Coachella outfits when your sister lives on the opposite coast of the U.S. So, we collaborated a mini must-have list to stock our suitcases with festival essentials.

Every weekday we will be featuring a new must-have leading up to Sarah’s arrival from the East Coast (woohoo!). Even if you’re not heading to Indio this year, these pieces will have you channeling your inner boho goddess for Spring and Summer.

Check back on Monday for more!

Friday Find Revisit: Mint Clothing Company

mint_fridayfind

Six months ago, in the very beginning stages of this blog, we had the idea of highlighting unique companies that fit our coastal states of mind with a “Friday Find” feature. The first “find” was Mint Clothing Company, a made-in-California brand made for the California girl (and the California dreamer). We fell in love with the comfy chic aesthetic of the Mint brand, along with its uber-stylish founder, Jessica “Jess” Snyder.

Since writing our post, we have seen Mint popping up everywhere, from Glamour.com to ABC’s “The Bachelor”. We couldn’t be more thrilled for Mint’s success, and we were even more thrilled to learn that Mint is launching its highly-anticipated Spring/Summer ’14 collection next week!

mint_ss14collage

Jess has expanded her ever-popular tees into a whole wardrobe of it’s-so-comfy-I’m-never-taking-it-off staples, including maxi dresses, shorts, and classic tees and tanks. The lookbook is full of outfits that instantly transport you to a summer state of mind. The versatility of every piece is undeniable; we can imagine some pieces under light layers for spring and some shining alone with just a few accessories.

It was next to impossible to just pick one “go-to” outfit from the collection because we just want one of everything (and we already agreed we just can’t share). So, after gushing over the lookbook and the sneak peek video, check out how we would style some of our favorites from the Mint S/S ’14 collection:

Busy as ‘B’s

So, the balancing act between being studious bloggers and studious working professionals/students is proving to be easier said than done. Sarah and I had a serious blogger brainstorm yesterday to conjure up a week’s worth of great blogging content, and we were stuck on a single letter: B.

Jokingly, this is the part where we would say “the posts for this week are sponsored by the letter B”. Thanks, Big Bird. (ah, more B’s!)

We will bring you a post every day this week about our favorite things beginning with ‘B’. I’m sure you could guess a few just by knowing us, but you’ll have to check back every day this week to see what we have in store.

Since it’s Monday, what better way to begin than with a list of my favorite bloggers?

With a community of millions, I’m lucky to have access to the stories and styles of countless inspirational bloggers. I chose a few of my many, many favorites to give you a taste of my go-to tastemakers.

Most Enviable Insta-Style: Aimee Song {@songofstyle} // Blog: www.songofstyle.com

With over one million Instagram followers, Aimee is obviously doing something right. I know I was checking my feed every second during NYFW to get a glimpse of which front row she would be seated in next, and what fabulous outfit she would wear there.

What I love most about Aimee: her airport style photos and her goofy candids with her equally-as-chic sister, Dani {right}.

Image

Best “Sister” Blog: The Sisters in the City // www.thesistersinthecity.com

Even though they are sister-in-laws, Sisters in the City is a great collaborative blog celebrating a shared love of fashion. Corbynn and Allison are two fabulous ladies with their own distinctive styles, one embodies the classic look of the city while the other embraces the laid-back lifestyle of Hawaii. I am equally envious of both of their styles!

What I love most about SITC: They host tons of amazing giveaways and their reunion post in Hawaii was adorable!

Image

Favorite Brand Blog: Bldg 25 (Free People) // blog.freepeople.com

Free People has such a great social media presence that I find myself clicking through any kind of link they throw my way – contests, DIYs, fashion snaps, everything. Yes, I love their clothes (and I still can’t figure out how they layer a gajillion pieces for flawless outfit), but I admire how they flesh out their brand in their lifestyle blog. From legwarmers to DIY hair masks, I can’t get enough from their plethora of posts.

What I love most about Bldg 25: Sneak peeks of their upcoming catalogs and real-life office style snaps from their HQ.

Super Cali-licious Blogger: Sincerely, Jules // www.sincerelyjules.com

Although there are many bloggers that call California home, the one that stands out as the epitome of West Coast cool is Julie Sarinana, or Jules. She finds a way to mix unique pieces into effortless ensembles, usually involving a graphic tee or a killer pair of Converse sneakers. And she is one of the few fashion bloggers that can also add designer to her resume, with an amazing line of statement tees sold on both her website and through collaborations (like her recent G.I. Jules x Revolve Clothing collection).

What I love most about Sincerely, Jules: The personal touches, like posing in front of her favorite LA spots, makes her blog so down-to-earth, and I love that she shares her love of statement tees by designing for the masses.

Image

My “Dream Closet” Style Pick: Gal Meets Glam // www.galmeetsglam.com

I wish I had every single item in Julia Engel’s closet. Even though I admire all of these big name bloggers I mentioned above, I actually want to cultivate a style profile similar to Gal Meets Glam. She is the “I-want-to-dress-like-this-when-I-grow-up” pick. Focusing on style and beauty, Julia’s blog gives glimpses into her chic San Franciscan lifestyle. When she’s not jet setting to NYFW, she’s vacationing in Hawaii or decorating her super chic pad or putting together a new beauty look.

What I love most about Gal Meets Glam: Well, everything. I could click through her pages for days. And, she keeps a running “Julia’s Picks” wishlist in the sidebar of her website, which makes her style that much more irresistible.

Hope I inspired some new bookmarks for you guys. See you tomorrow with a new ‘B’ blog post from Sarah!
