Weddington Way: October Style Challenge

Sarah and I are lucky when we get a chance to be on the same side of the country once or twice a year. These past six months, we’ve been just spoiled with the amount of sister time we’ve been able to spend together. Most recently, we were reunited earlier this month to celebrate the wedding of our cousin, Colby, and we were both honored to stand by her side as bridesmaids! Her wedding day was picture perfect, and the bride couldn’t have been more stunning. Here are a few of our favorite sister moments from the weekend:

wedding-collage

The wedding got us thinking about our own personal styles for our “big day”. I mean, what girl doesn’t dream about her wedding day – or at least make a board about it on Pinterest? That’s how we came across the October Style Challenge for Weddington Way. If you don’t know about the website already, Weddington Way makes planning a bridal party look effortless by curating the top trends and designers on an easy-to-use site.

For the challenge, we were asked to style a head-to-toe bridesmaid/Maid of Honor look, which was perfect timing for us! We began by taking the bridal questionnaire to gauge what style fit our personalities best by answering questions like “structured or flowy” and “what words describe your dream wedding”.

After our showrooms were created, we picked our favorite dresses and created Maid of Honor looks for each other. Yes, when you have a sister, you also get a built-in Maid of Honor for your wedding. And we wouldn’t want it any other way!

Emmy/West Coast Wedding

The words that stood out to me most on the questionnaire were “romantic” and “garden”. Living on the West Coast, there is an endless list of outdoor destinations I wouldn’t mind having my future wedding at. The location that inspired my head-to-toe look was this gorgeous Big Sur ceremony overlooking both the Redwoods and the Pacific Ocean. The style I chose was both romantic and feminine that paired perfectly with bohemian decorations, like a flower crown and Flash Tattoos.

weddington-emmy

Dress: Jim Hjelm Style Chiffon/Color 5414 (Sage)

1. A simple flower crown complementing a loose up-do. I couldn’t find a link to purchase the pictured crown, but something like this from Etsy is just as lovely.

2. Dusty rose lip color from Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics with a matte finish, and for an added bonus, it’s 100% Vegan, helping me and Mother Nature.

3. Forego the statement jewelry for Flash Tattoos, which are metallic temporary tattoos with unique designs, including this Lena set. And for $20, you can cover your whole bridal party!

4. Neutral shoe with a touch of bling. These are Vera Wang Lavender label, which are sadly sold out, but I love this alternative from Steve Madden.

Bouquet: I know I have always wanted anemones and peonies in my bouquet, and this amazing bouquet from a Gatsby New Year’s wedding perfectly tied the look together.

Sarah/East Coast Wedding

Classic and romantic is the vibe I was going for after completing my questionnaire. I am already a huge fan of designer Lela Rose, and mostly everyone knows that purple is my absolute favorite color, so this style was perfect for my dream wedding day. This elegant shape is a perfect canvas for modern accessories, like crystal drop earrings and killer laser-cut sandals.

weddington-sarah

Dress: Lela Rose Style LR207 (Color: Suede Rose)

1. A beautifully crafted sash from BHLDN with delicate flowers adorned with sparkling crystals adds an extra special touch.

2. I love a great lip color, and this easy-wear vibrant shade from Revlon is my everyday (and wedding day) go-to.

3. These neutral Klub Nico sandals have an Art Nouveau vibe to them that still reads really modern.

4. Crystal drop earrings from BaubleBar keeps a simple style with a serious dosage of sparkle.

Bouquet: The perfect blend of purples and pinks featuring my favorite flower, stargazer lillies.

We hope you enjoyed our Weddington Way styles!

Turn it Up Thursday

We love a playlist that gets you pumped up for the weekend. Still infected by the Coachella bug (#Coachellaforever), we are continually discovering new music from the bands we saw in the desert. This collection of songs is meant to get you moving, so if you’re taking a car trip this weekend or going for a long jog outside, make sure you turn up these tunes!

Kate Moss x TopShop: An Insider’s View

topshop_collage

You’ve seen the lookbook, the launch party, the lines of people, and now it’s finally here! The highly anticipated return of Kate Moss x TopShop is available in stores and online as of today. There is no arguing that Kate Moss is heralded as an icon in the fashion industry, turning heads with her timeless, effervescent style. Her design collaboration draws inspiration directly from her own wardrobe, so being able to own a piece dreamed up by the British babe herself is enough to sell us.

Even though this is the latest collection in Moss’s 7-year relationship with TopShop, the collections just started gaining more attention stateside after TopShop popped up in the U.S. in 2009. After then, the British brand escalated in popularity among the U.S. fashion community, including a huge partnership co-op in Nordstrom stores across the country.

And we are lucky enough to know a fellow FromVA2CA gal, the lovely Chelsea Stroud, who has worked with TopShop since their storefront opened at The Grove in Los Angeles. We all went to the same high school, and she moved out to California to chase her dreams of a career in fashion. Now a member of TopShop’s elite stylist team, Chelsea has styled everyone from Demi Lovato to Nicole Richie! We were so excited to get an insider’s look at the Kate Moss x TopShop collection from the lady herself, who answered a few questions for us.

Q: The collection is said to be inspired somewhat by Moss’s own wardrobe! Which piece from the collection do you think is a wardrobe essential?

topshop_whitedress

A: This dress is an amazing wardrobe essential. It will look flattering on any body type. It is something that you will keep in your closet for the rest of your life. You can never go wrong with a white, classy, chic spring/summer dress.

Q: What is/are your favorite piece(s) in the collection and what are a few different ways to style it?

topshop_fringejackettopshop_short

A: These are my two favorite pieces from the collection, this Leather Fringe Jacket and Suede Runners Short. They are perfect worn together as a set with a classic white tee underneath the jacket. OR you could wear them separately. I would suggest wearing the fringe jacket with a high-waisted pant to show off the fringe and a tight white or black tank underneath. The shorts could be worn with a denim button up shirt (half-tuck) or a black/white tee . As for shoes, I would always go with the staple black bootie. If you’re wearing the shorts with a black tee, I would go with a gladiator sandal in gold- so chic!

Q: Why do you think Kate Moss and TopShop are such a perfect fit?

A: This is Kate’s 15th collection with Topshop over a 7-year period. At this point, Kate is a close friend with the brand and the brand looks to her for inspiration when designing pieces for each season. Kate is English and it’s a really great representation of the brand to have someone from their own culture designing a line with the company. Kate is also a model and a style icon to people all over the world.

Q: Three words to describe Kate Moss x TopShop?

A: Fringe. Bohemian. HOT

Q: Should we be looking forward to another Kate Moss collaboration for the Fall?

A: I hope to see another collab with Kate by the fall but if not- we should definitely see another launch by 2015!

Thank you so much, Chelsea, for taking the time to answer some questions for us. Don’t forget to follow her @chelsealeastroud!

SUP Boarding: 1/2/3/4               Yoga Class: 5/6/7/8/9          Nature Hike: 10/11/12/13/14

The weather beautiful on the East Coast this past weekend, and now it’s warming up on the West Coast this week! We are always inspired to get outside and moving, but without looking like a schlumpy mess who rolled out of bed. And then when we pull together something that is halfway decent, we don’t want to spend a small fortune. Yes, investment pieces are key (see fabulous LuluLemon jacket above), but you can find chic basics for wallet-happy prices.

This post was mainly dreamed up from our obsession with Urban Outfitter’s new venture, Without Walls. Focusing on styles and gear for fitness, surf, and trail, Without Walls makes a stylish, active wardrobe attainable. They also introduce products from smaller companies that are making waves (yes, literally) in the industry! We currently have our eyes on Calavera swimwear, Onzie activewear, and Salt Gypsy surf leggings. There’s a lot to love on the Without Walls site, and you can find their products carried in select Urban Outfitters stores, too. We call that win-win.

Now, for the Get Movin’ part. If you’re looking to add some variety into your weekly workout, or just looking to get out there in general, we seeked out some great spots in both VA and CA for SUP Boarding, Yoga Classes, and Nature Hikes. Plus, you need a place to show off your new workout gear – right?

Orange County, CA                                                       Richmond, VA

SUP Boarding – SUP Fitness Laguna                       SUP Boarding – Surf & Adventure

Nature Hike – Peters Canyon Trail                        Nature Hike – James River Park

We know the East Coast weather won’t be nearly as nice as last week, so try out some of these fitness videos we love instead!

DIY Sunflower Nails

sunflower_diy

Spring is in full bloom! We love this DIY we spotted on our West Coast gal pal, Amanda’s Instagram (@NewberNewbz), so we asked her to share her secrets to perfecting this sunny manicure.

sunflower_whiteclear

 START WITH THE BASE

If you are just looking for a solid white manicure for sunny days ahead, Amanda said the CND will last about a week on its own. She also swears by the Seche Vite Dry Fast Top coat, saying it gives her a gel-like shine and a chip-free manicure longer than any other top coat she has tried.

Apply top coat after completing your sunflowers (see below for more), and in just minutes you will be good to go!

sunflower_supplies

 FLOWER POWER:

Here is the basic color palette needed to complete your sunflowers.

  • From left to right you will need a black, dark red, orange, and pale yellow polish.

You can pick up any of these colors at your local drug store, and don’t worry about the brand (the cheaper, the better). The orange and the yellow will be used for the petals, and the dark red and black will be used for the centers.

  • You will also need a toothpick (or nail art stick), a couple of micro paintbrushes (or nail art brushes), plastic lids for mixing colors, and a small bowl of acetate.

  • Focus on one nail at a time. With each nail, start by creating the petals of the flowers in the light yellow color. When the yellow is still slightly wet, dip one of your micro brushes in the acetone and then the orange to layer the colors. You can even swirl a bit of both the yellow and the orange on one of the plastic lids and go back in with a micro brush for more shading. Get creative!

  • Once all of your petals are completed, go back in to paint the centers in black. Using the toothpick, create the fuzzy edges between the center and the petals. Then, use the acetone in the same way as the petals, but this time by shading the dark red in with the black. You can even take the micro brush and layer some dark red spots in the very center of the flowers for some depth.

  • Lastly, clean one of your micro brushes of all paint, wet it with the acetone, and gently swipe your brush from the middle of the flower towards the outer edge of the petals, dragging a tinge of the darker hues from the center outwards to blend everything and add realism.

Finish with a top coat of the Seche Vite Dry Fast Top coat and let the sunshine in!

If your toes need some DIY love too, try a few of our favorites from the queen of fabulous pedicures, Goldfish Kiss: Springy Cherry Blossoms or Summery Pineapple toes.

And thank you again, Amanda, for contributing the pictures and instructions for the DIY. She’s the pretty lady on the left; we were so happy to bump into her a few weekends ago at Coachella!

It’s hard to describe how special it was celebrating both of our birthdays together in California for the first time… ever (we were born 368 days apart). These pictures come pretty close though. Sometimes we were making sure to pose just right for our Coachella Diaries post pictures, but most of the time we were being goofy and dancing and having a blast. Sisterly love at its finest!

Happy Easter!

We are excited for a day full of brunches, Cadbury eggs, and most importantly, Easter sales! We snapped this shot of us wearing our Mint tees last Sunday before our final day of Coachella. It’s no secret how much we love the unique design and comfy material of our Mint tees (see past reviews here & here). We’ve worn them all year long, dressed up and down, making them a staple in each of our wardrobes.

And until the end of today (4/20), you can add a Mint piece to your own closets while the entire Mint Clothing site is 30% off! Talk about a real Easter treat. Just enter the code “Easter30” at checkout.

Have a Happy Easter!

Coachella Diaries: Day 3

day3_top2

Waking up on the final day of the festival was bittersweet. We were excited to see the final set of performers, but so bummed to face the real world the following day. An early Starbucks run was a must before the long day of festivaling, packing, and driving, so we visited the El Paseo Shopping district in Palm Desert for a hearty brunch and some window shopping. Then, we geared up for one more great day at the grounds!

The hot and clear Day 3 (with no wind, yes!) called for comfortably cute sneaker ensembles. Emmy was dying to wear her white Vans that she painted for 4th of July last year, which she dressed up with a fringe bikini top and sheer kimono. Sarah rocked her own fringe festivalwear with dark cut-off shorts and brightly colored sneaks. The fringe looks even better when jumping, don’t ya think?

day3_bands

Who We Saw

It seems like we always start the day with a more mellow band, and Sunday was no different with a fun set from Frank Turner. If we were to describe his musical style, it would be a cross between Flogging Molly and Mumford & Sons, which sounds like a great musical pairing to us! We then danced away to the upbeat tunes of The 1975, and headed over to the Krewella tent. An EDM set during the daytime was definitely an interesting experience, since you’re not getting the full effect of the lights, but Krewella’s crazy talented girl duo made up for it. After Krewella, we made our way back outside to The Naked and Famous, whose dreamy melodies had us swaying. Our last performed of the night was Calvin Harris, and we wanted to have the best experience in the front (like, the VERY front), so we sat and held our seats for almost an hour. When he finally hit the stage, the music was so loud that our bodies were literally one with the beat. When he shot off fire and pyrotechnics, we could literally feel the heat on our faces. And then when the confetti shot out of the stage at the end, we were swimming in red hearts. It was loud and crazy, but in the best possible way. If you’re heading out to bands on Day 3, make sure to see Krewella, The Naked and Famous, and Calvin!

Coachella Diaries: The Dos & Don’ts

IMG_3654-edit-BLOG

After reading plenty of blogs and receiving some great advice from friends, we felt that we were overly prepared for the festival weekend (if that’s possible). Some pieces of information we somewhat ignored and thought we could get away with, like leather pants, black ANYTHING, and sandals. But we very quickly learned that some advice was spot-on and other words of wisdom were there to make our Coachella experience the best it could be.

Do List:

FLOWER CROWN: Our advice – make one, don’t buy one! Seriously a must, when else do you get to channel your inner flower child so freely? Check out some DIY’s here and here.

FASHIONABLE FANNY PACK/CROSSBODY: You thought the fanny pack was dead, but it is alive and well at Coachella. Neon, Designer label, Boho styles – you can really find a fanny (pack) that really suits your festival wear. Or, if you think they should stay in the past, opt for a crossbody. Just keep your hands free! No one likes to break it down with a huge backpack or purse in the way.

SNEAKERS/CLOSED TOED SHOES: You will thank us if you plan on taking on the EDM tents. We know you feel more with Mother Earth in your barefeet or more hippie in lace-up sandals, but for your own comfort and safety, cover up those toes! Coachella is a three-day, ALL day event and you will be standing for most of it…or dancing/running/cartwheels/hula hooping etc. Keep your feet happy and you will stay happy too!

CREATIVE GROUP EMBLEM: If you are going in a big group, having your own unique “thing” is a must. Something you can see high in the air or lighting up at night (or both), so that if anyone gets separated, the Minion on a stick will guide you home!  Remember: Anything goes! Giant flags, Cut-outs of lead singer’s faces, stuffed animals, pool noodles, etc.

SHORTS, ROMPERS, OR DRESSES WITH SHORTS: The desert heat is no joke and neither is the amount of sweating you will encounter! To get those carefree vibes, wear comfortable, yet cute, clothing, especially bottoms. Emmy wore a romper on the first day, and many people comment on a “bathroom situation”, but honestly I slipped the whole thing down my body, and was good to go (literally).

B.Y.O.W.B. (BRING YOUR OWN WATER BOTTLE): This one’s a biggie: HYDRATE! Coachella provides a couple of water stations for refilling bottles, so why not save some money and get a great new water bottle as another practical accessory! Remember, no metal bottles are allowed into the festival, so make sure you rock that BPA-free plastic.

FLASH TATTOOS: We mentioned the Flash Tattoos in our Day 2 Diary Post, but we saw these babies everywhere at Coachella (even on the fellas!). Add them to real jewelry, or show them off solo. We loved seeing all the creative placements and ways people wore their Flash Tats.

-BANDANNA/SCARF: Unless you want to experience #Dustchella with an exposed face, don’t forget to bring something that will cover up your nose and mouth in case the sand strikes again!

-HAT/SUNGLASSES/SUNSCREEN: Two words – Desert. Sun. Need we say more?

Read on for our “Don’ts” list!
