Coachella Diaries: Day 3

day3_top2

Waking up on the final day of the festival was bittersweet. We were excited to see the final set of performers, but so bummed to face the real world the following day. An early Starbucks run was a must before the long day of festivaling, packing, and driving, so we visited the El Paseo Shopping district in Palm Desert for a hearty brunch and some window shopping. Then, we geared up for one more great day at the grounds!

The hot and clear Day 3 (with no wind, yes!) called for comfortably cute sneaker ensembles. Emmy was dying to wear her white Vans that she painted for 4th of July last year, which she dressed up with a fringe bikini top and sheer kimono. Sarah rocked her own fringe festivalwear with dark cut-off shorts and brightly colored sneaks. The fringe looks even better when jumping, don’t ya think?

Who We Saw

It seems like we always start the day with a more mellow band, and Sunday was no different with a fun set from Frank Turner. If we were to describe his musical style, it would be a cross between Flogging Molly and Mumford & Sons, which sounds like a great musical pairing to us! We then danced away to the upbeat tunes of The 1975, and headed over to the Krewella tent. An EDM set during the daytime was definitely an interesting experience, since you’re not getting the full effect of the lights, but Krewella’s crazy talented girl duo made up for it. After Krewella, we made our way back outside to The Naked and Famous, whose dreamy melodies had us swaying. Our last performed of the night was Calvin Harris, and we wanted to have the best experience in the front (like, the VERY front), so we sat and held our seats for almost an hour. When he finally hit the stage, the music was so loud that our bodies were literally one with the beat. When he shot off fire and pyrotechnics, we could literally feel the heat on our faces. And then when the confetti shot out of the stage at the end, we were swimming in red hearts. It was loud and crazy, but in the best possible way. If you’re heading out to bands on Day 3, make sure to see Krewella, The Naked and Famous, and Calvin!

Coachella Diaries: The Dos & Don’ts

IMG_3654-edit-BLOG

After reading plenty of blogs and receiving some great advice from friends, we felt that we were overly prepared for the festival weekend (if that’s possible). Some pieces of information we somewhat ignored and thought we could get away with, like leather pants, black ANYTHING, and sandals. But we very quickly learned that some advice was spot-on and other words of wisdom were there to make our Coachella experience the best it could be.

Do List:

FLOWER CROWN: Our advice – make one, don’t buy one! Seriously a must, when else do you get to channel your inner flower child so freely? Check out some DIY’s here and here.

FASHIONABLE FANNY PACK/CROSSBODY: You thought the fanny pack was dead, but it is alive and well at Coachella. Neon, Designer label, Boho styles – you can really find a fanny (pack) that really suits your festival wear. Or, if you think they should stay in the past, opt for a crossbody. Just keep your hands free! No one likes to break it down with a huge backpack or purse in the way.

SNEAKERS/CLOSED TOED SHOES: You will thank us if you plan on taking on the EDM tents. We know you feel more with Mother Earth in your barefeet or more hippie in lace-up sandals, but for your own comfort and safety, cover up those toes! Coachella is a three-day, ALL day event and you will be standing for most of it…or dancing/running/cartwheels/hula hooping etc. Keep your feet happy and you will stay happy too!

CREATIVE GROUP EMBLEM: If you are going in a big group, having your own unique “thing” is a must. Something you can see high in the air or lighting up at night (or both), so that if anyone gets separated, the Minion on a stick will guide you home!  Remember: Anything goes! Giant flags, Cut-outs of lead singer’s faces, stuffed animals, pool noodles, etc.

SHORTS, ROMPERS, OR DRESSES WITH SHORTS: The desert heat is no joke and neither is the amount of sweating you will encounter! To get those carefree vibes, wear comfortable, yet cute, clothing, especially bottoms. Emmy wore a romper on the first day, and many people comment on a “bathroom situation”, but honestly I slipped the whole thing down my body, and was good to go (literally).

B.Y.O.W.B. (BRING YOUR OWN WATER BOTTLE): This one’s a biggie: HYDRATE! Coachella provides a couple of water stations for refilling bottles, so why not save some money and get a great new water bottle as another practical accessory! Remember, no metal bottles are allowed into the festival, so make sure you rock that BPA-free plastic.

FLASH TATTOOS: We mentioned the Flash Tattoos in our Day 2 Diary Post, but we saw these babies everywhere at Coachella (even on the fellas!). Add them to real jewelry, or show them off solo. We loved seeing all the creative placements and ways people wore their Flash Tats.

-BANDANNA/SCARF: Unless you want to experience #Dustchella with an exposed face, don’t forget to bring something that will cover up your nose and mouth in case the sand strikes again!

-HAT/SUNGLASSES/SUNSCREEN: Two words – Desert. Sun. Need we say more?

Read on for our “Don’ts” list!

Coachella Diaries: Day 2

Image

We hope you guys enjoyed our post from Day 1! We were slow to get out of bed the following day due to our aching backs and feet, so we started with an early breakfast at a cute French bakery and a little dip in the neighborhood pool. The weather was significantly cooler than Day 1, and there was a wind advisory, so we packed our scarves just in case. Little did we know that we would be attending #Dustchella several hours later (more on that below).

Outfit Details

Sarah (top): Brixton Messer Hat in Black, Ray-Ban Aviators, Asos top, Urban Outfitters shorts, Vans sneakers (old, similar here), Kai Luxe MERMAID necklace, Lightning Bolt necklace
Emmy (bottom): Handmade flower crown, Urban Outfitters sunglasses, Urban Outfitters dress, Seychelles boots, Long Lost Jewelry Love Spike necklace, Vanessa Mooney Pretty Girls necklace

Sarah mixed a fun sneaker with edgy high-waisted shorts and a black fedora style hat, and Emmy dressed down her feminine frock with playful cut-out booties. We also kept our accessories simple, but wanted something extra special to stand out in the desert. Enter Flash Tattoos. These metallic, jewelry-inspired temporary tattoos are the perfect way to layer on the bling without worrying about bulk or heat. We bought the Zahra pack for the festival. You can see them featured on Emmy’s shoulder blade in the bottom left frame of the Outfit collage and Sarah’s wrist in her close-up picture on the Top collage. Definitely a must for any accessories lover!

Who We Saw

We were pretty accustomed to the layout of the grounds by Day 2, so we were ready for another day jam-packed with bands. We started off with a mellow set from the crazy-talented City and Colour, and kept our spots for the highly-anticipated set from Kid Cudi, which did not disappoint! We took a few breaks for food and water, and then came back for the Foster the People set, which is one of our favorite bands to see live. Then, we ran over to catch the end of Sleigh Bells set before Pharrell. We’re sure you read about all of the craziness that happened with his 5 GUEST PERFORMERS: Busta Rhymes, Nelly, Diplo, Snoop Dogg, AND Gwen Stefani! Due to the winds, they had to keep many of the jumbo screens lowered, which was a bummer because there were so many celebrities in one place. We have no idea what Pharrell will have in store for Weekend 2, so you have to go see him, Kid Cudi, and Foster the People in your Day 2 events.

#Dustchella

One thing we did not foresee in our Coachella packing list was a bandanna. In the Day 1 EDM tents, we saw plenty of people with bandanas covering their faces, and we just figured they were making a fashion statement. Once we started having coughing fits, we realized that all of the jumping and dancing in one area creates a mini dust storm. So, for Day 2, we packed our scarf and bandanna planning to only use them in a tight-packed crowd. But the wind was so strong throughout the grounds, that there was dust flying all over our faces and into our eyes, nose, and mouth. Regular festival-goers said wind that strong was rare, but we ended up walking around looking like the picture above regardless. By the time we got a good look at each other in regular light, our faces were shaded by the light brown dust. Nothing another long shower couldn’t fix! But another tip would be to definitely pack a bandanna in your day bag – you never know how quickly the weather will change.

Check back tomorrow for our final day details!

Coachella Diaries: Day 1

Image

We’re really starting to feel the tinge from our post-Coachella blues. Three days of nothing but music, peace signs, and palm trees can really transport you to a vacation-like mindset. The best part about today was getting to upload 500+ of the pictures taken over the weekend and relive all of the fun through these snapshots in time. Since this was our first Coachella, we wanted to overview each day’s details, fashions, and performers to not only help us for next year, but to also give some insight to the Weekend 2 attendees! Day 1 was the longest, but it was also Emmy’s birthday, which made the day that much more special. It was also a scorcher in terms of weather, but the clouds and light breeze made for a perfect evening full of amazing acts!  Continue reading

Pumped-Up Kicks

sneakers

1/2/3/4/5/6

I thought the title was appropriate with Foster the People playing at Coachella this year. With concerts running from morning until midnight, I want to be able to walk the festival grounds all day without my feet becoming a sunburned, blistery mess. Fashion sneakers are the perfect way to keep things casual, but still fun and fashionable. I would pair any of these with denim cutoffs and a band tee. I’m going to pick up more than a few pairs at Urban Outfitter’s Spring Mix Sale – all shoes are 25% off (including those cute laser-cut Jeffrey Campbell sneaks)!

Which fashion sneakers would you wear at Coachella?

Leather is Better

leathercollage_final

1/2/3/4/5/6

Coachella isn’t just for the boho-vintage-hippie-flowery kings and queens. We’re talking about one of the biggest music festivals on the West Coast! With performances from HAIM, Queens of the Stone Age, Foster the People, Bastille, and CHVRCHES in the line-up, you need an outfit that will play up your inner rock groupee. This mix of summer leather pieces lend an edgy, sexy vibe to a flowy maxi skirt, or highlight a bold print for an all-out rocker look.

What are your favorite summer leather pieces?

Xx, E

Boho Bottoms

maxi 1/2/3/4/5/6

What better way to frolic around the festival grounds than in these beautiful bohemian bottoms? I love keeping my tops simple (a.k.a. a solid bikini/crop top), so I really want to have a fun print in a maxi skirt or pant to stand out. All of these printshave a tribal-floral feel going on, which make for the perfect festival fashions. Plus, I can wear any of these pieces well into summer with a lacy tank or graphic tee.

Which prints will you be rocking this festival season?

Xx, S

Play with Playsuits

jumpsuit_hires

 1/2/3/4/5/6

Rompers, playsuits, jumpers – whatever you want to call them – are the hottest essential for Coachella this year. I always feel so at ease in a one-piece, and it gives me more freedom to pile on the accessories. Even when the sun goes down, I can just throw on a long-sleeve tee and keep rockin’.

Coachella Bound!

coachella-checklist

Spring is here, which can only mean one thing for us West Coasters. Coachella is upon us! Well, actually make that two things. Coachella and the birthdays of FromVA2CA (April 11 & April 14). And amazingly enough, they both happen to fall on the same weekend! Best. Birthdays. Ever.

Yes, both sisters are headed to the desert this year for Coachella Weekend 1. As first-timers, our planning has been a little excessive, but we really can’t hide our excitement. The music, the atmosphere, and of course, the fashion! Indio the perfect place to let your inner flower child shine.

It is a little difficult planning your Coachella outfits when your sister lives on the opposite coast of the U.S. So, we collaborated a mini must-have list to stock our suitcases with festival essentials.

Every weekday we will be featuring a new must-have leading up to Sarah’s arrival from the East Coast (woohoo!). Even if you’re not heading to Indio this year, these pieces will have you channeling your inner boho goddess for Spring and Summer.

Check back on Monday for more!

Warby Mine: Warby Parker Spring ’14 Collection

Fixed Warby Mine

Happy Valentine’s Day!

We’re celebrating on the blog today by combining the holiday of love with a Friday Find. When I went to visit Sarah for her graduation in Richmond, one of the first places we visited was NeedSupply (our favorite local shop). While scouring for our usual trendy finds, we noticed a new wall of eyeglasses by the front of the store. And not just your normal run-of-the-mill glasses. They were cool, edgy, fun, and classic all rolled into one. They were all made by one brand – Warby Parker.

Warby Parker isn’t just a brand that  makes great eyewear; they are a company looking to change the world one pair of glasses at a time. For every pair purchased, Warby Parker provides a pair of glasses to someone in need. Talk about spreading the love!

Sadly, we both have less-than-perfect eyesight, and we have been in the market for new eyewear for what feels like eons. We could never find the right pair that married affordability with fashion sensibility. Warby Parker changed the whole game for us. Not only are they always on-trend with colors and silhouettes, but most pairs run under $100(!).

And their latest collection is no exception. Quoted as being “for every frame of mind”, the Warby Parker Spring 2014 collection is full of styles that fits any style or personality. Whether it’s a punch of color, like the Walker Canton Blue, or a modernized classic, like the Marcel in Plum Marblewood, these frames are perfect for whoever you want to be today.

The best part is, you don’t even have to go to a Warby Parker showroom to try these babies on. You can digitally try the frames on yourself, or should we say selfies. Then, you can choose your top five favorites to be shipped directly to you, for FREE, to make your final selections. And you only pay for what you keep (with FREE returns, too)!

Sarah and I had so much fun digitally trying out our future frames, and here are some of our favorites.

What frames do you love? Which would you order? Stay tuned to see which ones we ended up trying out at home!
