Coachella Diaries: Day 1

Image

We’re really starting to feel the tinge from our post-Coachella blues. Three days of nothing but music, peace signs, and palm trees can really transport you to a vacation-like mindset. The best part about today was getting to upload 500+ of the pictures taken over the weekend and relive all of the fun through these snapshots in time. Since this was our first Coachella, we wanted to overview each day’s details, fashions, and performers to not only help us for next year, but to also give some insight to the Weekend 2 attendees! Day 1 was the longest, but it was also Emmy’s birthday, which made the day that much more special. It was also a scorcher in terms of weather, but the clouds and light breeze made for a perfect evening full of amazing acts!  Continue reading

Pumped-Up Kicks

I thought the title was appropriate with Foster the People playing at Coachella this year. With concerts running from morning until midnight, I want to be able to walk the festival grounds all day without my feet becoming a sunburned, blistery mess. Fashion sneakers are the perfect way to keep things casual, but still fun and fashionable. I would pair any of these with denim cutoffs and a band tee. I’m going to pick up more than a few pairs at Urban Outfitter’s Spring Mix Sale – all shoes are 25% off (including those cute laser-cut Jeffrey Campbell sneaks)!

Which fashion sneakers would you wear at Coachella?

Leather is Better

Coachella isn’t just for the boho-vintage-hippie-flowery kings and queens. We’re talking about one of the biggest music festivals on the West Coast! With performances from HAIM, Queens of the Stone Age, Foster the People, Bastille, and CHVRCHES in the line-up, you need an outfit that will play up your inner rock groupee. This mix of summer leather pieces lend an edgy, sexy vibe to a flowy maxi skirt, or highlight a bold print for an all-out rocker look.

What are your favorite summer leather pieces?

Boho Bottoms

What better way to frolic around the festival grounds than in these beautiful bohemian bottoms? I love keeping my tops simple (a.k.a. a solid bikini/crop top), so I really want to have a fun print in a maxi skirt or pant to stand out. All of these printshave a tribal-floral feel going on, which make for the perfect festival fashions. Plus, I can wear any of these pieces well into summer with a lacy tank or graphic tee.

Which prints will you be rocking this festival season?

Play with Playsuits

Rompers, playsuits, jumpers – whatever you want to call them – are the hottest essential for Coachella this year. I always feel so at ease in a one-piece, and it gives me more freedom to pile on the accessories. Even when the sun goes down, I can just throw on a long-sleeve tee and keep rockin’.

Coachella Bound!

coachella-checklist

Spring is here, which can only mean one thing for us West Coasters. Coachella is upon us! Well, actually make that two things. Coachella and the birthdays of FromVA2CA (April 11 & April 14). And amazingly enough, they both happen to fall on the same weekend! Best. Birthdays. Ever.

Yes, both sisters are headed to the desert this year for Coachella Weekend 1. As first-timers, our planning has been a little excessive, but we really can’t hide our excitement. The music, the atmosphere, and of course, the fashion! Indio the perfect place to let your inner flower child shine.

It is a little difficult planning your Coachella outfits when your sister lives on the opposite coast of the U.S. So, we collaborated a mini must-have list to stock our suitcases with festival essentials.

Every weekday we will be featuring a new must-have leading up to Sarah’s arrival from the East Coast (woohoo!). Even if you’re not heading to Indio this year, these pieces will have you channeling your inner boho goddess for Spring and Summer.

Check back on Monday for more!

Warby Mine: Warby Parker Spring ’14 Collection

Fixed Warby Mine

Happy Valentine’s Day!

We’re celebrating on the blog today by combining the holiday of love with a Friday Find. When I went to visit Sarah for her graduation in Richmond, one of the first places we visited was NeedSupply (our favorite local shop). While scouring for our usual trendy finds, we noticed a new wall of eyeglasses by the front of the store. And not just your normal run-of-the-mill glasses. They were cool, edgy, fun, and classic all rolled into one. They were all made by one brand – Warby Parker.

Warby Parker isn’t just a brand that  makes great eyewear; they are a company looking to change the world one pair of glasses at a time. For every pair purchased, Warby Parker provides a pair of glasses to someone in need. Talk about spreading the love!

Sadly, we both have less-than-perfect eyesight, and we have been in the market for new eyewear for what feels like eons. We could never find the right pair that married affordability with fashion sensibility. Warby Parker changed the whole game for us. Not only are they always on-trend with colors and silhouettes, but most pairs run under $100(!).

And their latest collection is no exception. Quoted as being “for every frame of mind”, the Warby Parker Spring 2014 collection is full of styles that fits any style or personality. Whether it’s a punch of color, like the Walker Canton Blue, or a modernized classic, like the Marcel in Plum Marblewood, these frames are perfect for whoever you want to be today.

The best part is, you don’t even have to go to a Warby Parker showroom to try these babies on. You can digitally try the frames on yourself, or should we say selfies. Then, you can choose your top five favorites to be shipped directly to you, for FREE, to make your final selections. And you only pay for what you keep (with FREE returns, too)!

Sarah and I had so much fun digitally trying out our future frames, and here are some of our favorites.

What frames do you love? Which would you order? Stay tuned to see which ones we ended up trying out at home!

Friday Find Revisit: Mint Clothing Company

mint_fridayfind

Six months ago, in the very beginning stages of this blog, we had the idea of highlighting unique companies that fit our coastal states of mind with a “Friday Find” feature. The first “find” was Mint Clothing Company, a made-in-California brand made for the California girl (and the California dreamer). We fell in love with the comfy chic aesthetic of the Mint brand, along with its uber-stylish founder, Jessica “Jess” Snyder.

Since writing our post, we have seen Mint popping up everywhere, from Glamour.com to ABC’s “The Bachelor”. We couldn’t be more thrilled for Mint’s success, and we were even more thrilled to learn that Mint is launching its highly-anticipated Spring/Summer ’14 collection next week!

mint_ss14collage

Jess has expanded her ever-popular tees into a whole wardrobe of it’s-so-comfy-I’m-never-taking-it-off staples, including maxi dresses, shorts, and classic tees and tanks. The lookbook is full of outfits that instantly transport you to a summer state of mind. The versatility of every piece is undeniable; we can imagine some pieces under light layers for spring and some shining alone with just a few accessories.

It was next to impossible to just pick one “go-to” outfit from the collection because we just want one of everything (and we already agreed we just can’t share). So, after gushing over the lookbook and the sneak peek video, check out how we would style some of our favorites from the Mint S/S ’14 collection:

Happy New Year (+ Q&A with Tappan Collective)

Happy 2014!

We hope everyone is enjoying the fresh start that comes with a New Year. Looking back to 2013, it looks like it will be a tough year to beat. As sisters, we have always talked about collaborative projects to start, and this past summer we launched FromVA2CA.

Being separated by 3,000 miles is tough enough, but this blog was a way for us to feel closer than ever by writing posts together. We were able to discover similar bloggers, companies, products, and of course our own voices. And the best part was connecting with other people through the common interest of our blog.

We have rekindled old relationships and sparked new ones, and we want to thank each and every one of you that has taken the time to be a part of our blog.

Speaking of New Year’s resolutions, we have a few sister goals we set for ourselves, and one of those is to see and appreciate more art. We love community Art Walks and museums, but we have been anxious to start collecting some pieces of our own (other than on our Pinterest board).

Last year, we spotted a rad print from the Tappan Collective in the Holiday Gift Guide issue of Foam. It stayed with us because our last name is Tappen (with an ‘e’). So, we researched, we obsessed, and we reached out to the company’s co-founders for the chance to do a Q&A. And they said ‘yes’!

What we love most about Tappan Collective is that the company was founded by two fabulous ladies right out of college, Chelsea and Jordan, as way to get young and talented artists recognized. And they have a fabulous company name to boot. Check out the Q&A below:

Emmy & Sarah: Thank you both so much for your time! We obviously love the name of your company, but why did you decide to start the Tappan Collective?

C + J: After college, many of our friends sought us out to help create art collections for their new homes. We also have friends who are talented artists, but weren’t necessarily getting recognition from the art world yet and we wanted to find a way to support them. We landed on the idea of connecting aspiring collectors and emerging artists everywhere who favor sophisticated and fresh art to be apart of their daily lives.

We wanted to bring young artists’ work into the homes and lives of people with great taste and a limited budget.

Emmy: Since we’re all about East vs. West here, who are a few East and West-coast based artists you’re really digging right now?

C + J: Tappan Collective loves both East & West. Heather Day out of Oakland, CA is new to our family and she makes the loveliest paintings! Brian Merriam out of NYC, is a recent addition to the Tappan family as well and he does incredible things with the camera.

Sarah: Not a lot of people would think of Richmond, VA as having an incredible art scene. Where are a few other locations you have found with the same surprising/inspiring culture?

C + J: Detroit’s art scene doesn’t get enough attention! Two of our artists: Kelsey Shultis and Doug Galante, are producing some truly inspiring work out of Detroit. In the midst of all of its financial turmoil, the art scene is strong and continues to thrive.

Sarah: What advice would you give to someone looking to start collecting art?

C + J: Collecting art essentially depends on your instincts so trust whatever speaks to you.

Here are some of our Tappan Collective picks we’re dreaming of on our walls:

Wishing you all the best 2014 ever —

That familiar feeling is in the air – the call of college Winter break.  Another semester come and gone, and the promise of a fresh start in the impending New Year.

This Winter break will be a little different, signaling not only the end of a school year, but school altogether as Sarah prepares to graduate next month!

My baby sister has been slammed with the papers, projects, and exams that come in the home stretch, so I am honored to share some of her beautiful senior pictures. She just finished taking these this past weekend with her best friend and photographer, Sydney, and they completely capture her beautiful inner light.

collagesenior2

I am so proud of all that this lady has accomplished in the brief time she has been a Ram. She rose to the top of her class in Fashion Merchandising (and was hand-picked as one of the handful to meet Tim Gunn during a college visit), and plans to use her new degree to land a job at one of her favorite foamy companies.

Sarah is such a hard-working individual, and I completely believe she can achieve anything she sets her mind to. I just hope one day her aspirations will bring her to me on the West coast! Or we’ll make our own adventure in a new state. Is from VA2CA2HI too much?

It may be a month early, but congrats, seester! I love you so much.
